With special thanks to Burt Aaron for this generous donation to the museum.
This drawing of Angelica Molina captures her as a rally-goer for Andrew Yang’s 2020 presidential campaign. Created in the artist’s studio while working on the painting Yang Gang (2020), the sketch reflects the activism and youth engagement central to Yang’s platform, which advocated for universal basic income. The artist met Angelica during a canvassing event amid the 2020 election primaries. Angelica is wearing a “MATH” hat, Yang’s campaign acronym for “Make America Think Harder,” a play on Donald Trump’s slogan, “Make America Great Again.” Angelica represents a younger generation’s commitment to political change. This piece serves as both a personal portrait and a commentary on the importance of active participation in a polarized political climate.

JOURNAL OF ART CRITICISM
02.26.2019 | interview LINK
Interview: Susan M B Chen by Cornelia Smith, Columbia University.
The word “millennial” tends to carry with it some negative connotations; it’s often used by older generations as a way to dismiss certain concerns, especially in regards to the role social media plays in shaping our relationship to the world around us. Susan confronts these contemporary anxieties head-on. Predominantly a painter, Susan explores the liminal spaces between tangible reality and technology, often utilizing images of a portal to warp the worlds contained within her canvases. Her work is colorful and sinuous, a serene abstraction of life through an almost honey-coated lens. Though many of her paintings are large in scale, they are non-confrontational, and instead invite the viewer into a world at once familiar and curious—a realm replete with dreams, oddities, and honest self-reflection.
