Every month, women spend a required sum on menstrual products—yet free access to menstrual products is often dismissed as “feminist idealism.” Even eliminating tampon taxes has taken years of advocacy, with only recent progress in some states. If this expense were lifted, women could redirect these funds toward self-care, education, and empowerment.
While crafting this Free Tampax Box in ceramics, I also noticed the phrase “Out of Sight, Out of Mind™” printed repeatedly on Tampax packaging—reinforcing the idea that menstruation should be hidden, as if shameful. In many parts of the world, access to period products remains a challenge, and tampons are still considered a luxury. I created this installation to invite viewers to take, not just observe. Its ceramic fragility symbolizes the need to shatter taboos around menstruation. By abolishing tampon taxes—or better yet, providing free menstrual products—we can foster true progress and support this fundamental aspect of life.
